The scariest horror movie of 2023 is already being hailed as the modern day Blair Witch Project

From rave reviews for Blumhouse’s M3GAN on the unsettling nature of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, 2023 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest and brightest years for the realm of cinematic horror – and much to the surprise of absolutely nobody. However, there’s one found-footage horror film in particular that continues to garner plaudits, so much so that film critics are now dubbing it the modern version of 1999 The Blair Witch Project.

The film in question would be The Outwaters – a found-footage extravaganza that delivers an unforgettable, eerie experience that takes our deepest fears to the extreme. And if the vibrant trailer isn’t enough to spook people, then the film’s unsettling premise is sure to captivate moviegoers around the world. The premise mentioned above revolves around a group of artists who travel to the Mojave Desert to attempt to direct a music video. However, what happens shortly after is the kind of stuff straight out of nightmares.

Following the film’s theatrical release, no-nonsense critics took to Twitter to express their fascination and satisfaction with the latest found footage entry – where several hailed it as “this generation”. Blair Witch Project” and the The Outwaters borrows many inspirations from the timeless classic.

Of course, these comments don’t come as a surprise, since horror fans already praised the film as one of the best of the year a few weeks ago. Furthermore, even our own WGTC report put the sinister trait in a positive light. It will be interesting to see if that sentiment is reflected once the film is available to stream online in the future, but for now it’s hard to argue that this is actually the scariest movie of 2023.
