INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Republicans on Wednesday approved a new attempt to tighten absentee voting laws that opponents argue would create unnecessary hurdles for people wanting to cast ballots.

The House Election Committee voted 9-4 party lines in favor of the proposal, requiring voters to submit a paper application for a mail-in ballot to include a photocopy of their driver’s license or at least two identification numbers, such as their 10-digit driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number .

Osceola Republican Rep. Tim Wesco, a sponsor of the bill, said the move aims to verify who receives absentee ballots by aligning identification requirements with what people must provide when voting in person.

Democrats and suffrage groups argued that the new requirements could be particularly difficult for older voters to meet, and that county poll workers are already required to confirm that a person’s signature on the application matches that on their voter registration.

Other attempts for tougher rules on mail-in voting in Indiana have failed in the Republican-dominated legislature over the past two years, even as former President Donald Trump and many of his supporters fomented false claims that fraud led to his 2020 election defeat .

The bill now goes to the plenary for consideration.
