Warning: Spoilers for The last of us Consequences.
After returning to his regular schedule after episode five’s shaky release date, The last of us has once again struggled fiercely, with the sixth episode “Kin” proving to be one of the most emotional entries in a series that has already caused an unprecedented amount of tears and promises to evoke many more between now and the final episode.
It’s hard to single out one creative liberty in the HBO Max adaptation that hasn’t paid off spectacularly; Even small changes like the source of Joel’s deep wound make for an episodic reimagining prepared to exceed the sum of its parts.
And while we probably won’t see such freedom pay off until season two arrives, a change from the original game could send a Tommy Miller down a completely different path than some expected.
During the events of “Kin,” when Joel and Tommy are finally able to have a private brother-to-brother conversation, Tommy reveals that Maria, his wife and the Jackson settlement boss, is pregnant. This may have caught veterans last of us Fans caught off guard as such a development was not in the game.
For those of you who are familiar with this The Last of Us Part II, which will be adapting the announced second season, you may know that Tommy is going a little gung-ho, so to speak; an impulse that may be absent from the show when his arriving fatherhood leads to a conscious pursuit of self-preservation. And, well, let’s just say that Pedro Pascal, especially with the performance he’s putting in now, might not get as much of the spotlight as we expected for season two.
The last of us is available to stream on HBO Max, with new episodes releasing every Sunday until the season ends on March 12. A second season has been announced.
