‘The Last of Us’ fans really criticized Pedro Pascal for his patchy beard

The last of us is undoubtedly one of the greatest video games of all time, but the awe it brings to the story from its most die-hard fans is something not often seen in the entertainment industry these days. It’s no wonder, then, that many of them want to hold on to the franchise with their last breath, clinging to even the slightest discrepancy to say no to HBO’s upcoming live-action adaptation.

In this case, most of the criticism of Pedro Pascal’s casting concerns his patchy beard, which fans say doesn’t even come close to matching Joel’s iconic mustache. Regardless of his acting ability or whether he’s the right choice to portray a character originally portrayed by Troy Baker, we want to see some decent facial hair on this armed, rock-throwing protagonist.

You may find the subject too absurd to address or pay attention to, but according to the show’s executive producer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), this is actually a deal-breaker for many TLOU enthusiasts.

“You laugh, but for some people, that’s a serious deal-breaker for them!” he said in a recent interview with Chat The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re like, ‘Oh my god, he can’t even have the same beard as Joel in the game.'”

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay would not have been our choices to portray The last of us leads too, but if you can follow the trailers, the couple really brought Joel and Ellie to life in a way that might actually exceed our imaginations of the two characters. They might even add more depth to the story, blasphemous as that may sound.

In any case, we’ve officially got less than two weeks until the show debuts on HBO platforms. You can expect the first episode to be released on January 15th.
