The international terminal at San Francisco airport has been evacuated after the discovery of a “possibly incendiary” package

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) were suspended for several hours Friday night after a bomb threat prompted the evacuation of the international terminal, the San Francisco Police Department confirmed.

“Officials at the scene found a suspicious package and classified the item as a possible fire hazard,” said SFPD, who also confirmed one suspect was in custody.

The SFPD first learned of the threat around 8:15 p.m. The international terminal was evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Travelers have been told to avoid the international terminal “until further notice,” SFO tweeted around 9:30 p.m. Those who had been in the terminal gathered outside, waiting for the terminal to reopen, video shows.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station in SFO was also closed, preventing travelers from exiting or arriving at the station. Operations of the airport’s AirTrain people mover have also been suspended.

Both police and SFO warned passengers to expect delays and disruption to airport operations.

“International arrivals and departures have been disrupted,” SFO tweeted around 11:30 p.m. “Please check with your airline for the status of your flight.”

The international terminal had reopened just after midnight, and the airport resumed normal operations some time later, according to warnings issued by SFO.

SFPD is currently investigating the incident.
