The Houston Apartment Task Force inspects the Redford complex after two bodies were found in a week

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — The city of Houston is scrutinizing a housing complex after two bodies were found just days apart.

The city’s Apartment Task Force spent hours Friday at The Redford on the 1300 block of Redford Street along the Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston, according to Councilman Dave Martin, who represents the area.

During a comprehensive inspection of the complex, the task force found several safety issues, Martin said.

On Monday, October 3, a decomposed body was found in an apartment closet, wrapped in blankets.

Then, five days after a massive fire broke out in the apartments on October 1, a badly burned body was found in another building.

As of January 2022, ABC13 data shows there have been six other fatal shootings, one fatal stabbing and at least 10 other non-fatal shootings.

Local residents say that’s why they don’t spend much time outside.

“I’ve seen and heard so many people getting killed, getting stabbed, fires breaking out, bodies found, and it’s really scary,” said Nicole Rivers, a resident at the complex. “This is just awful.”

While inside the apartment, ABC13 observed vacant and boarded up apartments, broken windows and security gates left wide open in each building.

The sign on the sprawling complex says it’s under new management. No one could answer questions when ABC13 called on Friday.

According to Councilor Martin, the complex has hired private security and is working with the Houston Police Department to work out solutions.

“Something needs to be done here. You need to do something,” said a woman who recently moved out.

Rivers has a simple question. “Feeling safe and coming home to have peace. That’s it.”
