The growing representation of Latinas in politics

Latinas are exploring the world of politics more than ever.

The field, traditionally dominated by men, has changed in recent years. In Illinois – there are now six Latinas in the House of Representatives and four in the Senate.

Chicago also sees its share of representation with a Latina City Clerk and a Circuit Court Clerk.

The first Latina in Illinois and the Midwest is expected to be elected to Congress in November this year.

“When you start seeing more people like you, representing your background, your commitment and ‘compromiso’, that encourages you to go into the room and see it,” 20th said District Senator Cristina Pacione Zayas.

“The greatest accomplishment we can leave is a legacy that anyone can think they can run for office and not even question,” said Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza.

Although Latina representation has increased, statewide Latinas make up only 3% of Congress.
