The Football Association announce it is working with the UK Government to allow Chelsea to sell tickets to the FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace

Chelsea should be able to count on full support in the FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace despite sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich.

The club have been banned from selling any more tickets since the UK government sanctioned Abramovich on March 10, meaning Chelsea faced the prospect of playing the Wembley game without their fans.

However, the Football Association has announced that it hopes to allow Chelsea supporters to attend their round of 16 clash against the Eagles at Wembley, which takes place over the weekend of 16/17. will take place in April.

“We are hoping to sell out crowds for our two Emirates FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley,” said an FA spokesman.

“This includes tickets for Chelsea fans to their game against Crystal Palace and we are working with the Government on a method to achieve this while respecting the sanctions currently being imposed on Chelsea.”

Russian-Israeli billionaire Abramovich was sanctioned by the government on March 10, with Downing Street claiming to have proved his ties to Vladimir Putin.

The 55-year-old put Chelsea up for sale on March 2 amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The Raine Group, a US-based merchant bank, is managing the sale process. Interested bidders had until last Friday to submit their plans.

Julian Knight, chairman of the Committee on Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, earlier Monday had called for changes to Chelsea’s special license to allow fans to attend the semi-finals.

The intention of the license is to deny the club – and thus Abramovich – the opportunity to generate new income, including from ticket sales.

Chelsea fans were unable to buy tickets for last Saturday’s quarter-final win in Middlesbrough, other than those bought before sanctions were imposed, but Knight insists a solution must be found before the semi-finals.

“It’s ridiculous that we have to wait for a half-full Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Palace,” Knight said.

“Chelsea is more than just its owner, it is a living organism with tremendous importance to its fans and community. It was understandable that last week’s game against Middlesbrough was played without Chelsea fans at short notice, but with this advance notice the FA have no excuse to rule them out.

“The FA must be allowed to sell tickets to Chelsea fans as long as all the money goes to the people of Ukraine.”

Chelsea initially requested that the game against Boro be played behind closed doors “for reasons of sporting integrity” as it was not possible to sell more tickets to traveling fans, but withdrew the request later the same day.

The club are currently unable to sell new tickets to home sections of Stamford Bridge in excess of those already sold, or sell tickets to visiting fans.

Unless the license is changed, it means the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals will be played at home against Real Madrid behind closed doors.
