The father’s lifelong regret about leaving the child with the mother

GRANDPARENTS are often the best babysitters. Being their own flesh and blood, grandchildren can almost always be sure that their grandparents will shower them with immeasurable love and care.

For a father, leaving his 10-year-old daughter under her mother’s supervision even though he knew she was suffering from mental health issues gave him peace of mind while he was busy earning a living.

But on the morning of February 2, 2012, he received a phone call that would make any parent dread.

It was his 57-year-old mother.

As she spoke, the woman choked and told her son that she did not want to go on living and that she wanted to end her life.

She also told him that she killed his daughter, Fong Mei Shuang.

Stunned by what he heard from his mother, the man rushed back home to Koi Legian’s homes in Taman Kinrara, Puchong.

When he reached his eighth-floor apartment, he found his mother had locked herself in a room.

Peering through a keyhole, he saw the woman sitting on the windowsill preparing to jump off the building.

When he couldn’t persuade her to open the door, he called the police.

Several police officers, who arrived at the scene within minutes, broke down the room door and pulled the woman to safety. The woman’s hand was found to be bleeding.

Mei Shuang’s lifeless body was found on a bed in the room.

She had been suffocated with a pillow about 12 hours earlier.

Police learned that after killing her granddaughter, the woman severed her ring finger with a hatchet in hopes she would bleed to death.

The woman’s severed ring finger and a bucket containing a significant amount of blood were found in the kitchen of the home.

A note from the woman was also found in the apartment, which read: “My heart is not happy, I want to die”.

The woman and her family ran a restaurant that suffered financial losses, leading to frequent quarrels between them.

Investigators also learned that the woman had stopped taking her medication because of her mental health condition.

The woman, described by neighbors as friendly and close to her granddaughter, was arrested and sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

It is believed that her mental state precluded prosecution and probably saved her from the gallows.
