They tracked the step counts of 3,330 adult Americans for over a week in 2005 to see how it affected their long-term health.
Those who met a goal of 8,000 steps per day for three or more days were 16 percent less likely to die from heart disease through 2019.
dr Kosuke Inoue of Kyoto University in Japan said, “Individuals can get significant health benefits from walking just a few days a week.”
The researchers also found that those who walked 8,000 steps or more one or two days a week were 14.9 percent less likely to die over a 10-year period than those who never reached that mark.
And the health benefits of walking 8,000 steps or more one or two days a week appeared to be higher for participants age 65 and older, they said.
