The East Carolina-Tulane basketball game was postponed following the death of ECU radio station

Saturday’s men’s basketball game between East Carolina and Tulane University has been postponed after the sudden death of radio broadcaster Jeff Charles.

Charles died in New Orleans on Friday while accompanying him men’s basketball teamaccording to East Carolina University.

Charles has broadcast games for ECU Athletics for more than 30 years, including 15 bowl games and over 1,000 basketball games.

WNCT Greenville reported that 70-year-old Charles suffered a “medical incident” and was cared for by ECU trainers and then paramedics before dying shortly thereafter.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of longtime Voice of the Pirates Jeff Charles,” ECU sporting director Jon Gilbert said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Debby, Britt and all his family and friends. Jeff was a true professional in every sense of the word who had a unique ability to bring the game to life and connect with the audience.

“He means just as much to all ECU football, basketball and baseball fans and we know Pirate Nation mourns together tonight.

East Carolina head coach Mike Houston posted on social media to offer his prayers to the family.

“Got the news earlier tonight….devastating….Jeff was the consummate professional….always on point and always first class,” Houston wrote. “Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Quite Prate [sic] nation mourns with you. We love you Jeff.”

Phillip Rogers, ECU Chancellor, also offered his condolences to Charles’ family.

“If you know [ECU Athletics], you know Jeff Charles. Be [Pirate] Pride was evident on every show and in every game,” Rogers wrote on Twitter. “He will be greatly missed. Sending prayers to the Charles family.”

According to the school, Charles was named North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year in 2000 and 2014 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
