Johnny Cueto didn’t allow a run in his first two starts with the Chicago White Sox.
The Cubs matched him with two runs in the first early Saturday and didn’t look back, beating the Sox 5-1 in the City Series to a sell-out crowd of 37,820 in the guaranteed prize field.
Both first-inning runs came with two outs.
Patrick Wisdom’s bloop landed just out of reach of Sox first baseman Jose Abreu in flat right field for an RBI double. Wisdom scored on a Frank Schwindel single.
Nico Hoerner led second place with a singles, moved up to third with a singles by Rafael Ortega and scored when Andrelton Simmons floored Tim Anderson.
The Sox attempted to narrow the deficit at the end of the second when Yasmani Grandal attempted to score right from the second Jake Burger’s single. Ortega threw it on the plate to end the inning.
Burger took matters into his own hands in the fifth with a solo home run to the left, making it 3-1.
Adam Engel smoked a one-hopper that Cubs shortstop Simmons couldn’t handle and turned him into a double. But Keegan Thompson got Anderson to back out for third and Josh Harrison to fly out to the right to minimize damage.
Thompson (5-0) allowed a five-hit run with four strikeouts and a walk while posting a career-high five innings in his third start of the season.
Wisdom and Dizziness helped the Cubs add runs in the seventh. Wisdom hit loaded bases and hit a grounder deep in the hole between second and short. Anderson made a nice backhand stop and threw for a power in second. Wisdom defeated Harrison’s throw first and scored a run.
Dizziness followed up with an RBI single to the right, extending the lead to 5-1 and ending Cueto’s outing.
Cueto (0-1) — who started 12 straight innings Saturday since the Sox bought his contract from Triple-A Charlotte on May 16 — allowed five runs with nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 6⅔ innings.
The Sox went empty-handed with another scoring chance in the seventh. Burger and Engel had back-to-back singles with an out. But Rowan Wick tricked Anderson into breaking into a double play.
The Sox went 1-for-7 with runners in goal position and fell a game under .500 at 22-23.
