The big names Dr. Dre, Lil Baby and James Iovine endorse Prop. 28 to dramatically boost the arts in California schools – Orange County Register

Question: What do the chief architect of West Coast gangsta rap and an Atlanta rapper associated with Young Thug and the co-founder of Interscope Records and a former superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District have in common?

Answer: Support for Proposition 28, which California voters will decide on November 8th.

Prop. 8, created by former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner and endorsed by a growing number of big-name entertainers and Hollywood personalities, would increase federal funding to bring arts and music to public schools — to the tune of $1 annually billion US dollars. If the Arts and Music in Public Schools measure becomes law, funding would begin next year, with a larger allocation benefiting the state’s economically disadvantaged students.

The rappers Dr. Dre and Lil Baby, along with recorders manager James Iovine, came together at a forum hosted by Beutner at Santa Monica High School on Thursday, October 6 to discuss the proposal, which would require schools with over 500 students, inclusive Authorizes schools to spend at least 80% of the government funding they receive on hiring teachers. The rest they receive would go towards education, care and educational partnerships.

“I have no idea whose idea it was to take art and music out of schools, but I am the best example of why it should be here,” said Dr. Dre, who attended schools in Compton. “I wouldn’t be sitting here without art and music. Personally, I don’t like politics, but I’m here for Prop 28.”

Iovine also spoke passionately about the importance of music in giving young people some peace of mind and new information.

“Music and art are necessary for the soul, and without the committed soul you’re not going to be the right kind of person in the world — making life a better place,” Iovine said to cheers from the student audience.

“Bureaucrats think if you can take that out we need to cut something, let’s cut music and art. That is a gigantic mistake.”

Prop. 28 would double funding for arts and music programs, particularly in schools serving large populations of low-income black students, and is expected to see $800 million to $1 billion more flow into schools each year — about twice what they get now. If accepted by voters, it would dramatically expand music education for preschool through grade 12 students beginning in 2023-24.
