A 2014 Bill Murray comedy has emerged as the dark horse on Nielsen’s weekly cross-platform streaming chart.
St. VincentAvailable to stream on Netflix in the US (but not UK), Murray saw a grumpy Vietnam veteran who befriends a single mom (Melissa McCarthy) and her son (Jaeden Martell) when they move in next door.
Animation from Disney Plus from the year 2021 Encanto has held the top spot in Nielsen’s official top 10 streaming film list for weeks and does so in the latest report (per The Hollywood Reporter).
Nielsen measures viewership by minutes watched and Encanto between February 14th and February 20th (last week) registered 1.22 billion minutes.
However, after it was made available on Netflix, St. Vincent took second place with 411 million viewer minutes.
This puts the film ahead of films like Netflix The Tinder scammer and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Nielsen began releasing its top 10 lists of streaming movies and TV series in 2020. Data is collected and released with a five-week lag and includes US households only.
If St. Vincent managed to build on his surprising performance and challenge Encanto for the very first place remains to be seen.
