Tableau Kitchen + Bar Owners Relaunch Giving Table for Guests to Help Charities in Need – Orange County Register

When Tableau Kitchen + Bar at South Coast Plaza opened last December, owner Ed Lee and Executive Chef John Park knew the restaurant needed a Giving Table. The idea was modeled after the Illumination Foundation Chef’s Table Culinary Gala. Lee and Park had attended the benefit dinner for years.

Park enjoyed creating a themed dining experience. He placed dishes at the table and Lee poured the wine while laughing and talking to the guests. But the experience lasted only one evening. Rather than implementing the philanthropic idea once a year, Park and Lee, who already donate 10 percent of their restaurant’s earnings to various charities, decided to offer the experience more frequently at Tableau Kitchen + Bar. The duo also own Toast Kitchen & Bakery in Costa Mesa. (Toast’s second location will open in Tustin on Tuesday, November 15.)

In March, Tableau began hosting these charity dinners on the restaurant’s custom-made wooden table, made from a large tree trunk. The linear table cuts through the open-air dining room and acts as a statement element separating the bar from the surrounding tables. It’s not tucked away in a private room or tucked away in a corner. Instead, the linear table puts the guests – and their cause – on display.

The Giving Table dining experience is designed for 10 to 12 guests and includes a four-course chef’s meal with appetizer, small salad, entree and dessert. The experience will charge the host $50 per person (or $75 with matching wines), and each guest will donate an additional $50 or $100, which will benefit the charity directly.
