South Korea is building a new K-pop-only arena in Seoul

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and South Korean internet giant Kakao have signed a deal to build a new K-pop arena.

Yesterday (April 4), the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Kakao announced that they will construct a brand new complex dedicated to K-pop performances. Accordingly The Korea HeraldThe new complex, named Seoul Arena, will be built in North Dobong-gu of Seoul and is expected to be completed in October 2025.

According to reports, the Seoul Arena will include a specialized music concert venue with state-of-the-art sound technology with a seating capacity of around 19,000 and a maximum capacity of 28,000 for standing room events.

The complex will also include an additional medium-sized concert hall with a maximum capacity of 7,000 people, among other commercial facilities. Accordingly Pulse NewsKakao will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of Seoul Arena for 30 years after its opening, while the venue will be owned by the city government.

While Kakao officials have described the project as South Korea’s “first and largest” K-pop arena, entertainment giant CJ ENM began building a similar project last October.

CJ ENM’s CJ LiveCity Arena, scheduled to open in 2024, is reportedly designed for 20,000 indoor visitors and can expand to an additional 40,000 outdoors diversity. It is also said to be equipped with “the most powerful live performance infrastructure in the world” including stage engineering, sound and lighting engineering.

In recent years, Kakao has expanded its focus into the South Korean music and entertainment industry. Its mass media division, M Company, now oversees several major K-pop labels including EDAM, Starship and IST Entertainment, which are home to stars like IU, MONSTA X and Apink.
