Sinkhole opens after water main bursts in Hollywood Hills

A large sinkhole opened in the Hollywood Hills on Monday after a burst water main allowed water to flood city streets.

The breach was reported around 1 a.m. at the 6500 block of Cahuenga Terrace, near Cahuenga Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Department of Water and Energy spokeswoman Carol Tucker. The area is off the 101 Freeway across from the Hollywood Bowl.

News video captured by OnScene.TV showed water flowing down the streets. Cars created ripples as they drove through a deep pool near the highway entrance.

Crews responded quickly, shutting off the water in about 30 minutes, Tucker said, but the breach created a sinkhole on Cahuenga Terrace. The hole measures approximately 6 feet by 5 feet.

Neighboring buildings were not damaged and no casualties were reported.

The exact cause of the break has not yet been determined. However, it is one of several major water breaches in the area in less than a year. Tucker said Monday that the 8-inch cast-iron pipe that broke was installed in 1931.

“We are aware that there have been multiple breaches in this particular area on this particular mainline,” Tucker said. “The city has prioritized replacing the pipe, but we don’t have an estimated date when that will happen.”

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Energy has miles of pipes all over the city, she said, and a “large percentage” are still the originals.

“It’s a process of prioritizing those that need to be replaced and budgeting resources for them,” Tucker said.

Sixteen customers were left without water in the area on Monday morning, with service expected to be restored around 3pm
