CHICAGO — Owners of a nightclub in The Loop are frustrated after a shooting left a man dead in the area outside their venue early Sunday morning.
A 38-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were involved in a physical altercation near the 400 block of South Wells Street at around 1:36 a.m. when the 24-year-old man produced a gun and shot the other man in the chest .
The 38-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The 24-year-old man was taken into custody and taken to Rush University Medical Center for minor injuries.
Mary Ann and Reginald Marsh – owners of the nightclub – said the event before the shooting went off without a hitch.
“We were relieved,” said Mary Ann Marsh. “Nothing that happened behind the doors would have prepared us for the call afterwards.”
The Marshs had reopened the late-night spot at 408 South Wells Street after a four-month hiatus following two shootings earlier this year on the same block.
“They weren’t on [our] on the premises, that was across the street in the parking garage,” Reginald Marsh said of the previous shooting. “They assumed at the time that people would come out [our club] – But that’s just a guess.”
One such incident occurred around 3am on July 1 when two men were shot dead and three others injured. Two months earlier, in May, three people were shot dead in a car and a fourth was hit by a vehicle on the street.
Mary Ann Marsh said everything is out of her control, but it still hasn’t shaken the trust of her and her husband in Chicago.
“I love Chicago. I don’t think the city is out of control,” said Mary Ann Marsh. “We just have to do better. I don’t have all the answers, so I’m not running for mayor.”
