Santa Ana is looking for an owner to live in Thornton Park for free – Orange County Register

Here’s another type of housing opportunity: Santa Ana is looking for someone willing to live in a two- to three-bedroom trailer in Thornton Park, free to rent, as long as that person is also willing to serve. as the park’s ambassador for the surrounding community.

“We are working to keep our parks open, safe, clean and green,” said Lisa Rudloff, the city’s executive director of parks and community services.

“Having the presence of someone looking after the park makes all the difference. It’s like having their own valet at the park. ”

Meanwhile, the city is also opening two new small parks and adding 10 more gymnasiums and six water play areas at parks across the city.

Rudloff said the idea to identify and subsidize Host Park on-site came from her experience in the city of Encinitas in San Diego County. The Santa Ana City Council approved at a meeting in July 2020. Now, the officials are get an application.

“We are looking for someone who is friendly and can establish a positive relationship with the community, is sensitive to what is going on, and is a forward-thinking, helpful person,” says Rudloff.

As part of the volunteer work, the Host’s duties will include alerting officials to vandalism and other problems that may arise. Hosts will also be asked to empty trash cans during busy times, open and lock restrooms, and help with events held at the park.

Rudloff said: “While subscribers don’t get paid, the presenter will have flexible working hours and be allowed to hold another job outside of the park. In addition to providing free rent, the city will also pay for utilities.

If it works, pilot projects at Thornton Park could be expanded to other major Santa Ana parks, followed by Centennial and Santiago, Rudloff said.

“Once we start working on this program, I think it will spread. That’s a good thing for the community, and for the people who live there. ”

The California State Parks System has Volunteer campsites and park organizations in about 100 parks, including San Clemente State Beach. The National Parks and Forestry Service offers similar programs.

Other recreational plans in the works for Santa Ana include two new small parks. On Wednesday, January 12, the city will have a Breaking ground on the corner of Raitt and Myrtle đường for a new, 1.18-acre, $4 million park on two city-owned lots. The park will include an ice rink, exercise and picnic areas, and a butterfly interpretive garden. Another 1-acre park is planned for Standard and McFadden streets. With those parks, the city will have 47 parks.

However, Santa Ana, one of the most populous cities in the nation, is considered “park poor.” City officials are reviewing open space as part of an update to Santa Ana’s general plan; they are looking to provide two acres of park space for every 1,000 residents.

Other recreation-related projects in the works are new water play areas, or water play areas, for the Santa Ana Zoo, and at El Salvador, Caesar Chavez, Madison, and El Salvador parks. Memorial and Thornton.
