San Jose Sharks’ Nikolai Knyzhov will not play this season

SAN JOSE — Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov will not play for the remainder of the season, coach Bob Boughner said Saturday.

Knyzhov, the Sharks’ top rookie for 2020-2021, has not played at all this season as he has been plagued by a slew of lower body ailments including problems with his groin, a sports fracture and later an infection that kept him hospitalized for weeks, said Boughner.

The good news for Knyzhov, Boughner said, is that the worst appears to be behind him.

The Sharks (26-27-8) have 21 games left starting with Sunday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes at the SAP Center. Their last game of the regular season is April 29 in Seattle.

“There’s no chance he’s coming back,” Boughner said this season. “He’s made progress in his rehab and everything else but he’s not ready to play and I don’t see him playing for us this season. But there are some positive signs.”

The 23-year-old Knyzhov played all 56 games for the Sharks last season and emerged as one of the top-four defensemen, playing alongside Erik Karlsson in the second half of the year.

Knyzhov was set to be back in that role this season, but the sports hernia issue he was dealing with at the end of last season – which forced him to miss the World Cup – remained a concern.

Knyzhov did not attend the team’s training camp and after undergoing surgery in October, Knyzhov was expected to be absent for around eight to 10 weeks.

However, Boughner said Knyzhov’s recovery from surgery had serious complications.

“With the surgery came some setbacks and with some infections,” Boughner said. “Poor bloke, I think he was on an IV for a few months trying to just clear the infection out of his system. So it basically took all of his progress and reset it to zero.
