Samuel “Sam: Mills was accepted into the Harris County Fire Fighter Academy 2 years after a horrific accident in Katy

KATY, Texas (KTRK)– In December 2020, a Tompkins High School football player fought for his life in the intensive care unit after a devastating accident. Now, two years later, he wants to help others.

Samuel “Sam” Mills was thrown from his vehicle on December 26 after losing control and hitting a curb while driving home from his job at Chick-fil-A on Pin Oak Road.

Mills’ car rolled over at least twice, according to the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office. He was 17 years old then.

“Whenever I saw something hard, I didn’t run away, I ran toward it,” Mills said.

Mills’ road to recovery has not been easy at all. He underwent physical therapy and speech therapy.

The support of his loving family, the community and God, he writes, helped him get through it.

“I’ve learned a lot from my treatments. My verbal communication, my occupational therapy, especially my physical therapy,” Mills said.

Now in 2022, Sam was approached by a firefighter while working on his Chick-fil-A job. He gave Sam a business card and said to call him.

Sam did and felt inspired.

Then he applied and got into the Harris County Firefighter Academy.

“It’s our turn, not even as a family, but as individuals, to pass it on to these first responders. Because, boy, they don’t get recognized very often. And I’m glad Sam decided to get into this field just to pass it on,” said Carrie Mills, Sam’s mother.

A moment that comes full circle as Sam Mills, now 19, is inspired by those who kept him from passing it on and helping others.

“I have full confidence in him. He’s a fighter,” Sam’s mother said.

Training begins October 4 and lasts several months at the Harris County Fire Academy.

Sam says he’s looking forward to learning and growing. He wants to give back to the community that supported him through one of the most challenging moments of his young life.
