Route diversion for big fiesta parades gives way to new traditions in LGBTQ+ business district

SAN ANTONIO – Preparations continue for two of the most important Fiesta events, Battle of Flowers and Flambeau Parades. While this year’s new route broke long-standing traditions for many San Antonio families, business owners and employees on Main Avenue said they are pleased with the change.

According to the Fiesta San Antonio Commission, San Antonio College will serve as the formation area for both parades.

Main Avenue is now setting the stage for big crowds and new traditions due to ongoing construction along Broadway.

“Months in the planning, we (felt) excited, and a week (away from that) we’re ready to go,” said Liz Villegas, who runs several of the Main Avenue stores.

From the Main, the parade turns into Lexington, turns left onto St. Mary’s Street, turns right onto Brooklyn Avenue and continues onto Avenue E. The fun extends onto Houston Street and makes a quick left onto Alamo Plaza, around finally turning right onto Commerce Street to conclude the celebrations.

A few days before the big weekend, some Maine businesses are admitting they still need help.

“We’re going to enjoy it,” said Larry Polinard, owner of Who Dat Nawlins on Main restaurant. “We will need a lot more staff, a lot of volunteers. In fact, we work with the American Legion. We will be doing a joint fundraiser to help with recruitment because I don’t have the staffing. So both groups will benefit.”

Employees also enjoy the crowds, which are sure to boost business.

“We’re willing to take on anything that comes our way as long as it spreads positive vibes,” said Joshua Deleon, a waiter at Luther’s Cafe. “I hope they’re just having a good time and are safe.”

In an email to KSAT 12, Steven Rosenauer, executive director of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission, said: “Approved food, beverage and merchandise vendors will be posted along the route, and there will also be vendors at Crockett and Madison Square parks. Additionally, we will have official Fiesta sponsors like Toyota in our Sponsor Village area in Madison Square Park, which will feature music, food, drinks and more Fiesta fun during the parades.”

Although it’s unclear if Route 2022 will be permanent or temporary, some traditions, such as nonprofits selling street seats to raise funds for their organizations, will remain. Parade organizations continue to sell grandstand seats.

The 2022 Battle of Flowers Parade will take place on Friday April 8th and the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday April 9th.
