Roger Federer says he’s retiring from professional tennis

CHICAGO — Roger Federer announced Thursday that he is retiring from professional tennis at the age of 41 after winning 20 Grand Slam titles.

Federer has not competed since Wimbledon in July 2021. He’s had a series of knee surgeries.

Federer published his news on Twitter and said that his farewell event will be next week’s Laver Cup in London. This is a team event run by its management company.

The news comes just days after the US Open ended in what was expected to be the final tournament of 23-time Major champion Serena Williams’ career.
