It’s time once again to address the most important pop culture question of a generation: do people prefer Big budget fantasy shows whbefore people take off their trousers, or those where they stop?

That’s correct: Per diversityNielsen just released some streaming Viewer statistics for August 29th to September 4th, ie the first week in which both Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and HBO’s house of the dragon, were both out there fighting for your digital attention with all their elves and incest and intrigue and shit.

But before we get to those tasty, juicy ones Numbers – oooh, who wins, who’s the king of the ring kites, we need to know! –unfortunately we do have to Eat our vegetables in the form of the same damn Caveats that seem to keep popping up with third-party ratings of streaming viewership. For example: As diversity indicates that the time window here is not exactly aligned: dragon released its premiere episode back on August 21st, so what we’re seeing with those dates is the period between right after it released its second installment, and right after it released its third. (ringsmeanwhile released its first two episodes four days after the measured period.) There is also the problem that house of the dragon simultaneously aired on HBO — at least for the premiere of about 10 million people —while Lord of the Rings is streaming exclusive, so by default these numbers may not reflect actual viewership.

(Also: There’s the fact that while Nielsen got better At this stuff over the decade since streaming has essentially shattered their entire business model into tiny bits, their numbers are still belied by actual networks and services. These too are only from the USA, well.)

ok, do you have all that? expectations set appropriately? Understanding the nuances and complexities of the streaming ecosystem properly achieved? Big!

However, Rings of Power kicked the shit out house of the dragonwith viewers reportedly streaming 1.3 billion minutes of the Amazon show during the game of Thrones Prequel made a whopping 781 million. That sat rings topped the Nielsen charts for the week while a house came only in 5th place. (One place behind game of Thronesin fact, which presumably saw a spike in interest ahead of the new show’s release.)

As diversity points it out, regardless of the whole piss match aspect is the first third-party data to back up Amazon’s own claims that 25 million people saw it Lord of the rings Premiere. Who would have thought: Throw billions of dollars at one of the most well-known IPs in the world, market it relentlessly and own one of the largest retail conglomerates in existence and you too could one day have a number one fantasyy TV hit!
