Republicans want to give tax cuts to heterosexual couples who procreate

A proposed law in Texas would give heterosexual couples additional property tax breaks depending on the number of children they have.

HB 2889 was proposed by Republican lawmaker Bryan Slaton, who said the bill was an “incentive” for what he called a healthy family unit.

Married heterosexual couples living in Texas who have four “eligible” children would receive a 40 percent property tax reduction, increasing by 10 percent for each additional child.

The last tier – 10 or more “eligible” children – would see a 100 percent cut, removing the tax altogether.

But if you’re a same-sex couple or divorced, you’re out of luck.

“I’m from East Texas. We have biblical values ​​where we want people to get married, stay married, be fruitful and reproduce,” Slaton told Fox7.

“We need to support more children. Yes, I’m a little worried about our birth rate.”

UN forecasts suggest that while US birth rates are slowly declining, the decline in fertility has plateaued in recent years.

While research suggests this is due to economic factors, it’s also worth noting that the change in birth rates compared to the last decade is tiny and consistent with the rest of the world.

On his website, Slaton linked to a petition asking people to “tell the Texas state legislature that you support Texit.”
