Republican senators are trying to define what a woman is

There seems to be some confusion among Republicans in Congress as to what exactly a woman is — perhaps because there are so few women among them.

It’s somewhat surprising that this debate would spread now that human women have existed on Earth for at least five million years, but for some reason Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) felt the need to name the candidate for colonel last week to ask the court Ketanji Jackson Brown to define the term “woman” once and for all.

Jackson declined to answer the question because 1) it’s not her job, 2) the question seemed to stem from the recent spate of bad faith, anti-trans hysteria, and 3) it’s a whole for the gotcha moment she designed was for the purpose of producing video clips for right-wing media to mobilize Republicans ahead of the midterms. Of course, Jackson’s lack of response gave Republicans fodder to claim that they (aka all liberals) have no idea what a woman is.

HuffPost brilliant returned this tactic against Republican politicians themselves, asking them on the ground to define the term “woman.” And they predictably sounded like idiots trying to do that.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) described a female as “an adult female of the human species” (we love to see an incumbent US Senator describe females as members of a litter of puppies). Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told the HuffPost that a woman is “someone who is biologically a woman” and specifically “the stuff of the birds and the bees” – very revealing! Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), always the biggest hitting nerd in the room, chimed in that a woman is “a homo sapien with two X chromosomes.” And Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), now impressively the most annoying of Wife Guys in a highly competitive field, told the outlet, “I have more of a traditional view of what a woman is: my wife.” We like to think, that he said it in the Borat voice.

Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and John Kennedy (R-LA) notably declined to offer definitions, but oddly they don’t get the same opposition as Jackson for doing the same thing. And Sen. Josh Hawley sadly took it upon himself to go into detail, defining a woman as “one who can bear a child, a mother, is a woman” and “one who has a womb.” If someone has their reproductive organs removed through a hysterectomy, for example, what then? “I mean, a woman has a vagina, right?” Hawley asked the HuffPost reporter. We regret hearing the word “vagina” come out of Hawley’s mouth.

If the pro-insurgency senator’s rambling thoughts on motherhood as the equivalent of femininity sound familiar, you’re probably thinking of fascist government propaganda Italy’s struggle for births campaign of the 1920s. The campaign impressed Italian women that their sole existential purpose was to bear children and bring glory to their nation by increasing its population. In any case, it seems worth noting that Hawley’s definition is not only imprecise, but also deeply offensive to trans and cis women struggling with fertility issues.

I have to acknowledge that like Jackson, who refused to answer the question because she is “not a biologist,” I’m not a biologist either. But since none of the Republican men of note right now are biologists either, I’ll interject into the dialogue to say that I identify as a woman and therefore am very comfortable. It really isn’t complicated.

I share many similarities and experiences with other women, apologizing at chairs and tables I accidentally step on and often being told to “smile” by random men. I also happen to be a “homo sapien with two Xs” – thanks Ted! But ultimately, I’d like to think that if I lose my reproductive organs to medical tragedy or decide not to reproduce, I’ll still be a woman because, again, I identify as one. I feel like one; i want to be one That’s all that needs to be said.

Look, we all know what this is about. Conservative politicians have chosen to champion trans dehumanization and obsession with trans children’s genitals as a successful political strategy to mobilize an increasingly and unabashedly hateful base. Florida is new so-called “Don’t Say Gay” lawthat would essentially cut LGBTQ students off from critical support systems in their schools and prevent basic teaching about gender identity and sexuality is already in place distribution to legislators in states like Ohio. And Republicans (especially Cruz) are lose their shit about the trans swimmer Lia Thomas, who is successful in a women’s sport, although she otherwise doesn’t care about women’s sports. Restricting the definition of “femininity” to a conservative notion of how women should look and behave has become an electrifying issue for Republican voters who are generally afraid of social progress.

As long as Republicans insist on providing the dumbest definitions of womanhood they can think of, may I draw your attention to that The optical illusion that supposedly “shows whether you have a female or male brain”. Women, you will see the silhouette running away from you; Males, see the outlined figure running to She. Hope this clears things up!
