Report: Biden will soon sign executive actions on police reform

President Biden plans to sign executive actions on police reform in the near future, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

Details are still being worked out, but will likely be finalized at the beginning of Black History Month in February, sources said. In September, the Justice Department announced new policies banning the use of barricades unless deadly force is authorized and restricting “no-hit” orders, and NBC News said the actions remain unclear. Biden’s administration will be different.

Before bipartisan talks on police reform broke down in the Senate last year, Biden decided not to sign any executive action because he didn’t want to hinder the negotiations. In September, Biden shares his frustrations about the Senate’s failure to support the George Floyd Justice Policy Act that was passed by the House, but said he still hopes to “sign into law a comprehensive and meaningful police reform bill that honors the name and the memory of George Floyd, because we need legislation to ensure lasting. and meaningful change.”
