CHICAGO — After years of renovation, Cardinal Blase Cupich Sunday blessed the site of the former Our Lady of the Angels Relief Center.
The ceremony took place on the 62nd anniversary of the original dedication ceremony of the school building, which burned down in a fire in 1958. 95 people died in the blaze – most of them children – and the incident prompted an overhaul of fire safety codes for schools across the United States.
“We pray for healing and peace for all affected by this great tragedy,” Cupich said during the rededication ceremony.
The renovated building will expand the outreach of Our Lady of the Angels Mission, which ministers to the church with a pantry and neighborhood programs.
“We provide food, clothing and household goods to 3,000 families every month,” said Sister Stephanie Baliga. “Retreats and Accommodation for Volunteers [also] expand our work.”
Baliga is someone who used her feet as well as her faith while serving the mission of Our Lady of the Angels. Next weekend she will run in the Chicago Marathon.
“This is how the providence of God works,” Baliga said. “When everyone works together and is generous, that’s how grace works here in our world today.”
Since forming Team Our Lady of the Angels at the Chicago Marathon in 2012, they have raised more than $1.5 million to support the mission’s work, according to Baliga.
