Rangers keeper McGregor is putting off retirement decision until summer

The 41-year-old made his 500th cap for the club in Cinch’s Premiership win over Dundee United on Saturday, but his contract expires in the summer and with Ibrox boss Michael Beale being linked with other goalkeepers, it’s unclear if the veteran decides to move on.

McGregor was in a similar position a year ago when it was widely speculated he might be ready to retire, but he agreed a new one-year deal in the summer and remains the club’s number one.

“I have to focus on the games, end the season and then make my decision,” he told Sky Sports when asked about his future plans. “That’s exactly what I did last year. I’ll focus until the end of the season and see what happens then.”

McGregor insists he will only continue playing if he still feels he can be a key player for Rangers next season.

“I’m considering if I think my body can handle it, if I’ll be good enough to play for me at the highest level,” he said when asked about the factors that will decide if he continues playing .

“Everyone says play as long as you want and I get that. But do I want to sit on the bench? To be fair I was at the beginning of this season but I want to feel like I can contribute and that will be an important factor.”

McGregor admits he was honored to make his 500th appearance for the club in two spells.

“It’s a great honor, personally,” he said. “I’m not the type for personal achievements, but it means a lot to me.

“I came here as a boy and to get a gig let alone 500 is a massive thing for me.

“I looked at it (the list) not long ago and it’s a small list for the club that’s been here for over 150 years so it’s a little humbling for me.”

McGregor was rewarded for his service on July 18 with a testimonial match against Newcastle.

“It’s fantastic, I’m glad the club did that for me,” he said. “It’s going to be a great occasion because their fans are top notch too. It could be the first game of our pre-season so it’s going to be a good night.”
