Putin moves military helicopter to Ukraine border as talks with US stall

Russia is moving military helicopters into position on the Ukrainian border, which could be a sign of an impending invasion, New York Times report.

Follow Time, “US officials say that … the chances of a Russian invasion are limited, as the temperatures will freeze the ground – allowing heavy vehicles and equipment to move easily – before the ice freezes melts in spring, possibly starting in March, creating a quagmire.”

About 100,000 Russian troops, 1,200 tanks and hundreds of other vehicles are massing on the Ukrainian border, Forbes report.

Conversation between US and Russian diplomats began in Geneva on Monday in an attempt to defuse the situation, but little progress has been made. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei A. Ryabkov has tried to minimize the risk of Russian aggression even as President Vladimir Putin continues to take aggressive actions.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said Russia’s request for NATO to reduce its troop deployment in Eastern Europe and bar Ukraine from becoming a member of the alliance was “unfounded”.
