The Premier League endured another dramatic weekend – on the pitch and in the VAR room.
The tired-looking Manchester United seemed to have run out of ideas at Leeds United on Sunday until Marcus Rashford came on with a late header before Alejandro Garnacho sealed a 2-0 win.
Manchester City later ended a turbulent week with a comfortable 3-1 win over Aston Villa, but Erling Haaland will be rated ahead of Wednesday’s top-flight clash against Arsenal after suffering a blow.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was introduced to eliminate human error in important decisions made by referees on the pitch, but three incidents this weekend have exposed mistakes made by the VAR officials themselves.
Leaders Arsenal drew 1-1 after VAR let Brentford equalize despite being in the build-up for offside. Brighton & Hove Albion also drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace after Pervis Estupinan’s goal was wrongly ruled offside.
The refereeing panel, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), said both incidents were due to “human error”.
Chelsea were also mortified when West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek blocked Conor Gallagher’s shot with his arm. However, calls for a penalty were ignored, with Chelsea manager Graham Potter saying it was a “good save”.
