Pope Francis calls ‘gender ideology’ ‘dangerous’

Pope Francis in Rome

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has attacked “gender ideology” calling it one of the “most dangerous colonizations”.

In an interview with Argentina’s daily newspaper LA NACION, published on Friday (March 10), the Pope blasted contemporary debates around the issue of gender.

“Why is it dangerous,” the pope told Vatican correspondent Elisabetta Piqué, “because it blurs the differences and worth of men and women.”

Pope Francis went on to say that the so-called “gender ideology” “goes beyond the sexual” and “the issue of gender dilutes differences and makes the world equal, all boring, all equal.”

“It goes against human vocation,” he added.

He further said: “[‘Gender ideology’] eliminates differences, and that erases humanity, the richness of humanity, both personal, cultural and social, the diversity and tensions between differences.”

During the interview, Piqué told Pope Francis that she recently filled out a form where one could tick either male, female or non-binary.

The pope said it reminded him of Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson’s 1907 dystopian novel. The lord of the world.

“There is a future emerging where the differences disappear and everything is the same, everything is unified, one boss all over the world,” he told the reporter.

Being LGBTQ+ is still “a sin,” Pope has said

The Pope has spoken on LGBTQ+ issues numerous times during his tenure.

He has said on numerous occasions that being gay is neither a crime nor should it be punished for it, while parents should accept their gay children.

However, the Argentine Pope has also emphasized that homosexuality is a sin in the eyes of God and something the Catholic Church cannot support or bless.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church still states that same-sex relationships are “acts of great depravity” and adds: “Under no circumstances can they be sanctioned.”

In August 2022, the Pope met with four trans people who had taken refuge during the coronavirus pandemic at the Community of the Holy Immaculate Virgin in Rome’s Torvaianica district.

The Vatican newspaper reported that Sister Genevieve Jeanningros and local priest Andrea Conocchia said the meetings with the Pope gave hope to the groups.

“No one should face injustice or be thrown away, everyone has the dignity of being a child of God,” said Jeanningros.
