Police: Murder suspect killed with gun by Ohio officers

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) – Authorities in Ohio say a man who was fleeing a fatal gunshot was later shot by police officers after he was confronted by them and produced a gun.

Hamilton Police said in a statement that a man was found dead after an altercation just after 7pm on Saturday in Hamilton after a car crash turned into a criminal attack at a petrol station.

Police said the suspect fled in a vehicle that was later found in the nearby community of Fairfield and Hamilton officers went there to search for him. Police said they spotted the man just after 8 p.m. Saturday and confronted him.

Police said the man “produced a pistol that prompted both officers to fire their firearms.” The suspect was hit and officers provided medical assistance and took him to UC West Chester Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the police shooting and the Hamilton Police Department is investigating the earlier murder. Police said the Butler County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the two men after their families are notified.

Hamilton Police Chief Craig Bucheit said multiple investigations were ongoing into both cases and there were no other suspects in connection with the earlier murder.

“It is still very early and there is still a lot to do,” said Bucheit. “From what I’ve seen, the officers followed their training, used good tactics and acted to stop a very dangerous suspect from harming someone else.”

Butler County Attorney Michael Gmoser said he will present the findings of the state investigation to a county grand jury, as is his policy for all such cases.
