Person killed in Purdue dorm

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – A Purdue University student is dead and another is in custody after a murder in one of the university’s dormitories.

A university spokesman confirmed that a homicide occurred overnight at McCutcheon Hall. According to the Purdue Housing Website, McCutcheon is an all-male dorm.

Police received a call around 12:44 a.m. According to Purdue officials, the suspect made the call.

The suspect was taken into custody. A Purdue spokesman said the suspect and victim were roommates.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Varun Manish Chheda, 20, of Indianapolis. He was just over a month away from turning 21.

A Purdue University senior said other students on the same floor were awakened by a “scream or some loud noise.”

Police say there is no danger to students and the surrounding community.
