Warning: This article contains spoilers for HBO’s The last of us.
Despite the warning of what’s to come in episode six of The last of us, nobody was ready as the episode recreated word for word another iconic cutscene from the games. This is just another reminder of how good the original story was and how HBO made it their own while staying true to the games.
Episode six entitled “Kin” reenacted the scene where Joel decided that Ellie might be better off with Tommy because he’s getting old. This led to an argument between the two as Ellie didn’t want Joel to leave her behind because she was afraid of the outside world. Fans were made aware of the episode’s events in advance thanks to various stills for the upcoming episode circulating on social media days before its release, and were still surprised at how Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey made the scene their own.
This is one of the few scenes that The last of us recreated from the original video games. From the breakout day of the first episode to the deaths of Sam and Henry in the fifth episode, these scenes didn’t deviate from the source material, which made fans appreciate the show even more. While trying to deviate from the source material from time to time, scenes like this are just a reminder of how good the original storytelling was and how HBO does a wonderful job of translating the game for a television audience.
Episode six of The last of us can be streamed on HBO Max
