Orange County reports 8,440 new cases and two more deaths, Jan. 13 – Orange County Register

The OC Health Care Agency reported 8,440 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, January 13, bringing the cumulative total since tracing began in the county to 422,418.

There were 86,255 new cases reported in the two-week period before Thursday.

One more confirmed COVID-19 case was reported at an Orange County hospital on Thursday, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to 1,072. There are 168 patients in the intensive care unit.

The county reported two more deaths on Thursday, bringing the virus death toll in Orange County to 5,916.

Data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or collected through case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on December 31.

Of the 5,916 reported virus deaths, 1,221 were residents of skilled nursing facilities, 647 were in assisted living facilities, two were OC prisoners, and 19 were listed as homeless.

An estimated 314,541 people have recovered from the disease. The number of people who have recovered is based on the previous 28 days of cumulative cases.

There have been 6,652,854 tests performed so far, 269,716 tests recorded in the last week. The county is currently reporting that data weekly on Thursdays.

The data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials stressed. More information may be available as individual case investigations are completed.

The California Department of Health and Human Services said 2,194,814 people in Orange County were fully immunized as of Thursday. This represents 69% of Orange County’s total population.

975,937 booster doses were administered, representing 22% of all doses administered in Orange County.

According to the OC Health Care Administration dashboard, the percentage of the population by age (eligibility is now open to children under 5 years of age) with at least one dose is:

  • 5-11: 28% (75,959)
  • 12-17: 71% (173,160)
  • 18-24: 80% (238,256)
  • 25-34: 75% (345,339)
  • 35-44: 82% (342,267)
  • 45-54: 84% (373,541)
  • 55-64: 89% (368,261)
  • 65-74: 98% (276,165)
  • 75-84: 100% (149,826)
  • 85 years or older: 97% (60,583)
