Ohio Supreme Court rescinds Republican Gerrymander map

The Ohio Supreme Court annulled a Republican-leaning congressional map on Friday, ruling that it was tantamount to a dealer folding the deck and sending it back to state lawmakers to try. again.

The map would give Republicans a 12-3 advantage in House elections, even though the GOP recently won only about 55% of the popular vote statewide.

Under an amendment to the Ohio Constitution passed by many voters in 2018, cartographers are not allowed to redistribute the state in a way that is too pro-one-party. The proposed map was drawn up by Republicans in the State Legislature and passed without Democratic support, and the court rejected it in a Decision 4 to 3.

“When the dealer puts the cards in front of the deck, the dealer usually wins,” wrote Justice Michael Donnelly for the majority, adding that the Republican plan was “introduced with undue partisan bias.”

“This is not what Ohio voters want or expect,” the court ruled.
