Officials: Student brought unloaded gun to Columbia City High School

COLUMBIA CITY, Indiana (WANE) — A student brought an unloaded gun to Columbia City High School on Friday, according to a letter sent to families at Whitley County Consolidated Schools.

According to Superintendent Laura McDermott’s letter, the student brought a concealed, unloaded handgun, let other students handle the gun, and took it home at the end of the day.

The letter said the incident was reported to the authorities as soon as the administration found out about it. “Both school officials and law enforcement will take appropriate action,” the letter said.

McDermott said the district plans to work with school resource officers and safety experts to take additional steps to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

A first letter from Columbia City’s principal was sent to parents of high school students. McDermott then mailed this letter to all WCCS families.
