After years of trying to bring his remake to life, The Northman‘s Robert Egger finally has the support needed to create his own version of Nosferatu. The film, which is being officially produced with Focus Features, will star It is Bill Skarsgard and the idol‘s Lily-Rose Depp.

Per meeting‘s Description, in reinterpretation, “Nosferatu is a gothic tale of possession between a persecuted young woman (Depp) in 19th-century Germany and the old Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgård) who is after her and brings untold horror with him.”

Nosferatu has been on Eggers’ agenda for some time, with several failed attempts to get the project up and running. After directing The lighthouseBack then, Eggers set out to create a remake of the classic film, with the rumor mill throwing names like Harry Styles out for the lead role. Anya Taylor Joy originally wanted to step in for the director again Nosferatubut scheduling conflicts have reportedly opened up the space for Depp.

“It fell apart twice. I was trying to publicize it because it turned out Harry Styles was going to be in the movie.” Eggers previously told IndieWire. “And I’m just wondering if Murnau’s ghost is telling me to stop.”

Friedrich Murnau, of course, directed the original 1922 silent film (itself a bootleg riff on Bram Stoker’s Dracula Roman), in which Max Schreck plays the notorious Count Orlok. The story has remained relatively untouched, save for Werner Herzog’s 1979 remake starring Klaus Kinski as Count Dracula, on which Eggers has his own thoughts.

“Herzog’s film — for me, and I love Herzog, he’s one of my favorite directors — but I feel like it’s inconsistent,” Eggers said. “I love the score, dear [Isabelle] Adjani darling [Klaus] Kinski, but like front-lit night scenes, huh? That’s just duke making duke. But the best sequence of this movie for me is getting into the castle with Das Rheingold and I don’t even know if it makes sense in the movie even though it’s awesome. But at the same time, because of German history and German cinema history, it was his right to make this film and he had to make this film. I do not know. Maybe Murnau will tell me I’m not right.” Nosferatu by Robert Eggers cast Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp
