GOSHEN, Indiana (AP) — A northern Indiana man pleaded guilty Thursday but is mentally ill to the murder of a 73-year-old auto dealer.

Samuel Byfield, 23, has been accused of stabbing Goshen’s used car dealer Wayne Bontrager eight times after the two began an argument during a test drive on February 14, 2022.

First responders found Bontrager still breathing and conscious, with a bloodied knife on the ground nearby. Byfield was arrested after a 911 caller followed his vehicle until it crashed and he fled on foot. Police found him in a wooded area after following his tracks in the snow.

Byfield, of Goshen, told investigators Bontrager told him to return to the car lot and hit him in the chest as he drove on. He said they exchanged punches, and then he stopped the car and pulled Bontrager out. Bontrager died from his injuries almost a month later.

His plea provides for a prison sentence of 55 years. He also has to pay Bontrager’s family damages.

Elkhart Circuit Judge Michael Christofeno accepted the lawsuit and set the sentencing date for February 9. Northern Indiana man pleads guilty but is mentally ill in death
