Non-binary singer Sam Smith scoffed at the use of the term “fisherthem”: “What new linguistic hell is this?”

Singer Sam Smith confused Twitter users Tuesday when he announced he’d rather be a “fisherman” than a “fisherman.”
“I love fishing! Yes, I do! Yes, I would love to be an angler!” Smith said in an interview with the BBC.
“What? Like a fly fisherman?” asked the interviewer.
“I would be any kind of fisherman,” he replied. “I think I’d like to – someday I’d like to just end my days fishing like I’m sitting on a bench.”

The interview quickly sparked reactions on social media, with many users calling out to Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses “she/them” pronouns.
“Sam Smith says he loves fishing and identifies as FisherTHEM, not Fishermen but Fisherthem,” tweeted influencer and detransitoner Oli London.
“What is this new linguistic hell?” Media personality David Vance tweeted.

“Sam Smith needs to shut up,” Piers Morgan, host of Piers Morgan Uncensored, tweeted on Fox Nation.
“The saddest part is the fact that no one pulled Sam Smith up on ‘Fisherthem’…even though he smiled crookedly! THAT was the interesting thing! #SamSmith #fisherthem‘ tweeted British TV and radio presenter Bev Turner.

Sam Smith sparked a Twitter fury last month after they released a music video that featured hypersexualized scenes, including the singer in a glittery corset, underwear, nipple pasties and a tiara, while backup dancers wore pants with their backs cut out in the shape of a heart encircling them .
Smith was later slammed for performing on the theme of “evil” Satan at the Grammy Awards where they were performing A Duet with transgender artist Kim Petras for her song “Unholy”. For the performance, Smith wore devil horns, while Petras circled in a cage against a backdrop of flames, and dancers dressed as demons crawled across the stage.
