Nicola Sturgeon laughs at ‘secret lesbian’ claim and reveals reason for resignation

NICOLA Sturgeon yesterday laughed at claims she had a secret love affair with a French diplomat.

Suggestive rumors about the former First Minister’s private life have plagued Holyrood and Westminster in recent years.

One is that she is a “secret lesbian” involved in an affair with a French diplomat.

It was further rumored that the couple also bought a “love nest” from Sir Andy Murray’s mum Judy.

But Ms Sturgeon laughed at the baseless claims on the latest edition of BBC Scotland’s Nicola Sturgeon Podcast, where she recounted how she had heard them all.

Presenter Glenn Campbell asked her, “Which French diplomat are you having an affair with?”

Laughing, she replied: “I’ll tell you from the off which one it should be.

“But whatever it is, we actually laughed about it.”

“I read accounts of my life on social media and I’m like, ‘It sounds so much more glamorous and so much more exciting.’

“You know I have houses all over the place if you believe social media.”

Ms. Sturgeon has been married to Peter Murrell, who was CEO of SNP until last month, for twenty years.

Speculating on the reasons for the rumours, Campbell noted that it could stem from the idea that much of Ms Sturgeon’s personal life remains a mystery.

He suggested that people could make up the details of their lives in the absence of actual facts.

In response, Ms Sturgeon revealed that keeping her private life secret was one of the reasons that led to her shock resignation.

Speaking on the podcast, she said: “It’s partly the nature of the media climate that we’re living in right now.

“That may be one reason why I am stepping down.

“I’m not naive, and I don’t think I’m going to resign one day and be completely anonymous the next day.

“But I want a little more privacy, I want a little more anonymity.

“I just want to protect something that people take for granted in their lives that I’ve forgotten: just the simple joys in life, being able to meet a mate for coffee.”

It comes after Ms Sturgeon was tipped to take part in the next series of Dancing on Ice.

Her love of the rink has led to bookmakers putting her 2/1 to sign up for the ITV smash.

And she might be encouraged to take part after watching former pariah Health Secretary Matt Hancock do the final three in the final series of I’m A Celebrity. . . Get me out of here.

Ms Sturgeon has told how she grew up at the Frosties Ice Disco at Magnum Leisure Center in Irvine, Ayrshire, close to where she grew up.

She also showed her skills when she visited an ice rink at a Christmas market in Aberdeen and later tweeted: “Actually, until today I had forgotten how much I love ice skating.”
