Newport Beach carjacking and barricade suspect identified as 26-year-old Costa Mesa man – Orange County Register

A 26-year-old man was behind bars on Wednesday on suspicion of stealing a vehicle near Fashion Island and leading Newport Beach police on a chase before barricading himself in a house and eventually surrendering.
The Costa Mesa resident was arrested on suspicion of robbery, auto theft, felon possession of a firearm, ammunition and a large capacity magazine, as well as assault with a deadly weapon, reckless evasion of police, probation violation and carrying charged with holding a weapon in public place, Newport Beach Police said. According to prison records, he was being held without bail.
Police were dispatched to a report of a car theft near Fashion Island at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, police said. The man is accused of taking a vehicle and when it broke down, he ambushed another vehicle at gunpoint, police claimed.

Police chased the stolen black Jeep Cherokee for several miles until the suspect stopped on Santiago Drive in the Dover Shores neighborhood, jumped out and ran away, hiding in an apartment building where he barricaded himself, police said.
Officers eventually caught up with the suspect at 8:50 p.m. in a back yard within a police-established perimeter, and he surrendered without incident, police said.
