NEW YORK CITY– A new show on Hulu was inspired by a Los Angeles attorney who first rose to fame as part of the “dream team” defending OJ Simpson.
Shawn Holley went on to represent the likes of the Kardashians, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber and the late Tupac Shakur.
Her story was altered for television and the fictional character she inspired is no longer a defense attorney in Reasonable Doubt.
Jacqueline “Jax” Sewart’s ethics have been called “questionable” and the line between right and wrong gets blurred for her at times, but that makes Jax an intriguing character, says the star who plays her.
“She is fearless,” said Emaytzy Corinealdi. “She’s this high-profile attorney, and what have you got. She’s also a little bit messy and unpredictable. She’s trying to find out.”
Jax is a prosecutor who is also a wife and mother juggling marriage, children and a murder trial.
The pilot for Reasonable Doubt was directed by Kerry Washington, who, as one of the series’ producers, helped bring it to Hulu.
Her role may be behind the scenes this time, but Washington uses her experience as a performer to guide her players.
“I always feel like I know when I’m directing a scene when I say, ‘Put me in, coach,'” Washington said. “Like when I love what I see so much that I want to jump into it. Then I know that we are doing something right.”
“Reasonable Doubt” is a presentation of the Onyx Collective.
“Onyx is this brand new platform within Hulu where they tell stories driven by color artists,” Washington said. “These are our experiences as people of color, and they will resonate around the world.”
“Reasonable Doubt” is now streaming on Hulu, which is owned by Disney, that channel’s same parent company.
