RELATION Describing Usher as “one of the greatest voices of this generation,” R&B hitmaker Vedo released his sixth studio album mood swings this January.
The album’s 13 tracks reflect a man on the nuances of love, relationships and having fun, Vedo said The sun in an exclusive interview.
“I wanted (to present) a work that speaks to all the different emotions in a person, because it’s not all about partying or love. There are sad times, times when you’re insecure, insecure, depressed, or times when you don’t feel valued or taken advantage of,” he said.
Each of the songs on mood swings captures one emotion and balances it with an opposite emotion, such as how the song Forever has Vedo sing about permanence and settling down, but then in the more mature DAF, it’s about being a gamer.
Vedo explained that the decision to record songs with a wide range of emotions was also a challenge for himself to make a real album that is “not 100% sex-oriented”.
For a song like “Celebrate,” which is dedicated to his fiancée, Vedo says it’s also for listeners to celebrate their significant other.
He also says his daughter played a big role as an inspiration for several tracks on the new record.
mood swings is also the culmination of others who contributed to the album, as this was the first time Vedo brought a team of writers on board.
“I’ve racked up some big hits with my other albums, but I just felt like I needed to take a different approach just to try it. I wanted to tell someone else’s story from the other writers. I also wanted a different vibe. I wanted to bring something different and see what we could do by pushing myself out of my comfort zone.”
It sounded like a natural progression for Vedo since his debut album 93has grown both musically and stylistically.
“Everything is different. I think the growth is strongly reflected in mood swings because it’s an honest project with honest songs,” he admits. The singer also took up the industry-wide theme of making music with intentions of going viral.
Vedo explains that there’s no true formula for how to make a song that you know is going to go absolutely viral, so singers should focus on just making great songs that “make people feel good, being loved and evoking emotions”.
“If a song goes viral and it’s not a good song, it probably won’t last. So you have your viral moment for that song, and when people get wind of the whole song and they absolutely don’t like it.
“My take would be don’t go into the studio to make a TikTok hit. You’ve got to hit a hit, period, one that’s going to change your life, that’s going to buy a diamond and buy your mom and dad a house or something.”
