Nasa reveals the first humans to walk on the moon in over 50 years – including the world’s first woman

NASA has announced that Christina Hammock Koch, as part of the US space agency’s Artemis II mission, has become the first woman to walk on the moon.

Three others were also named as part of NASA’s mission to put boots on the moon for the first time in 50 years.

Jeremy Hansen, Pilot Victor Glover and Commander Reid Wiseman were also selected for the voyage.

Glover will be the first black man to walk on the moon.

The team was jointly selected by NASA and the Canadian Space Agency.

Koch holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, totaling 328 days in space, and participated in the first all-female spacewalk

Vanessa Wyche, director of the Johnson Space Center, said: “We have made many great leaps over the past 60 years and fulfilled President Kennedy’s dream of putting a man on the moon.

“Today we stand on the shoulders of giants.

“That’s just the beginning. For the students who are with us today… They are the futurists, the future scientists, engineers and mathematicians of the Artemis generation.

“Under Artemis, we will explore the frontiers of space and push the boundaries of what is possible.”

Artemis II is scheduled to be launched in November 2024 at the earliest.

It is the first time a human has approached the moon since Apollo 17 landed on the lunar surface in 1972.

In mid-March, NASA unveiled its next-generation space suit that the astronaut team will wear on the moon.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said: “The first woman and the first person of color will make giant leaps on the lunar surface.

“The biggest and most powerful rocket in the world will take them to the sky and they will go to the moon.

“It is a mission that is significant in many ways. It’s a demonstration of our ability to push the boundaries of human achievement, and a testament to the team’s unwavering commitment to making it possible.”

The team will embark on a 60,000-mile round trip to the moon and back in SpaceX’s spacecraft.

After their time on the lunar surface, they will eventually return to Earth at speeds 30 times faster than sound.

“Throughout human history, people have looked up in wonder at this celestial body, the moon,” added Nelson.

“We will show what is possible when we venture to different cosmic shores.”
