Mom Says DC Police Shot Son After Mistaking Him For Assault Suspect

Washington, DC police are accused of shooting dead a man in a case involving a mistaken identity, and the mother, who reportedly witnessed it all, is speaking out about the incident.

“You know you shot the wrong person,” Dorothy Hoes told FOX 5 of the shooting involving officers, which took place around 10 a.m. Friday on Good Hope Road in the city’s southeast.

Hoes says her son, 38-year-old Steven Shaw, was still handcuffed to an intensive care unit bed as of Sunday and she could not see him.

The police were originally called to an altercation. When they arrived they found a woman who told police a man hit her with a metal box, threatened her and ran away.

An officer began searching the area for the suspect described by the woman and approached Shaw, who was in the passenger seat of a parked car with Hoes.

“I’m the young lady who was driving the car that Steven Shaw was shot in,” Hoes said.

She says the officer asked Shaw several times to get out of the car.

“Steve was like, ‘I’m not getting out of my mom’s car because I haven’t done anything,'” she adds.

Police say Shaw failed to comply and reached into his waistband before the officer fired his gun.

“I saw when he shot him. I saw the light and then the smoke and Steven was like, ‘Man, why did you shoot me?'” Hoes said.

Shaw was taken to a hospital for surgery, where he was arrested for possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Another man, 59-year-old Wallace Lewis, faces multiple charges in connection with the attack and is reportedly the man police were originally looking for.

Police say the officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave and body camera footage of the incident is being reviewed.
