Michigan Fall Colors Update: What to Expect This Weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Temperatures have definitely dropped as fall has officially begun in western Michigan. Fewer daylight hours and cooler temperatures are starting to tease out the fall colors, but there’s still a long way to go before we peak.

One of the best ways to see where the color is starting to unfold is with high-resolution satellite imagery. The latest MODIS images from September 30 show some progression in the higher elevations of the upper peninsula, but there is still plenty of greenery even to the north.

As a result, forecasts for this weekend call for mottled colors for most of the state. The weather conditions are perfect for spending time outdoors and getting a glimpse of the early, mottled color that has begun across Michigan.

Fall colors have been noticeably delayed in Michigan compared to about a decade ago. The leaves are now changing about a week or two later than the average in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Forecasts continue to point to bright colors in early October for the Upper Peninsula, with most in western Michigan seeing the brightest color in late October this year. At the latest near lake shores or places further south we will see some trees endure until the beginning of November.

One of the best influencers on fall color is humidity and daily weather conditions. Conditions seem ideal for vibrant color changes this year. Most of Michigan has recovered from the drought with lower water tables than 2020. This should allow for gorgeous color and slower leaf fall.

The daily weather was also conducive to a good color show. Warm, dry days and cool nights are the best for getting the best shows out of the trees. While daily weather remains to be observed, all factors so far this fall point to successful color shows and tours for the 2022 season!
