Meat the Need program seeks hunter donations

GARRETT, Indiana (WANE) – An organization is calling on Indiana hunters to help feed Hoosiers in need this hunting season through the Meat The Need fundraiser program.

Hunters, farmers and members of 4-H donate deer and livestock through the Meat The Need program with Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry. It is a non-profit organization that partners with community members and organizations to provide meat to hunger relief organizations, who then give the produce to residents in need.

The system: Anyone with a hunting license can donate to 85 participating meat processors and tell them it’s for the Meat The Need program, then the meat is given to hunger relief organizations located in the same community where it’s donated became.

Katie DeForest, Fund Development Director at Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry, says that while they accept all animals, they place an emphasis on deer during hunting season for many reasons.

“Voyage is actually a really lean, nutritious protein. It’s one of the heart-healthiest proteins you can get, it’s packed with zinc and B vitamins,” DeFrost said.

She also mentioned the need for this type of protein in hunger relief organizations.

“Famine relief organizations typically get protein in the form of non-perishable foods like peanut butter. They don’t usually get a lot of fresh meat,” DeFrost said. “By hunters donating their deer to our program, we gain an additional resource not available in stores.”

According to DeFrost, Hoosier’s Feeding the Hungry is receiving more requests for help from food supplies this year due to inflation. She says as food prices have soared, it has become too expensive for pantries to buy meat.

Feeding America estimates that 47% of Indiana residents facing food insecurity earn too much to qualify for help through the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Here help from hunger relief organizations is used.

There is no cost to hunger relief organizations or donors to the Meat The Need program. Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry will cover all handling fees. The organization serves all counties of Indiana, including Allen County. Find more information on how to donate or become an agency to obtain meat here. Meat the Need program seeks hunter donations
