Mass rallies in Chicago to support abortion rights

CHICAGO — Hundreds of people representing dozens of organizations fighting for abortion and reproductive rights filled Federal Plaza Saturday afternoon.

While abortion remains legal in Illinois, about a dozen other states have banned the medical procedure since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June, prompting Chicago organizations to continue advocating for abortion and reproductive rights at the federal level.

“Hundreds of thousands of people across the country live in states with total or near-total abortion bans,” said Dr. Allison Cowett, medical director of Family Planning Associates. “You are vulnerable.”

Ralliers also believed that the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v Wade opens the door for other groups to lose certain legal protections.

“This includes laws targeting transgender youth and their families,” said Martese Chism. “[These are] Attacks on LGBTQ+ people.”

To reflect changes in abortion and reproductive rights in states across the country, Dr. Cowett that they have greatly expanded their services and staff.
